Phillips Sonicare Flexcare Toothbrush with UV Sanitizer

I went to the dentist at the beginning of 2009, and I was diagnosed with receding gums. Since then, I've been trying to brush my teeth gently, to avoid excess stress on my gums. John claimed that my teeth were starting to yellow, but I do not believe him. His cousin in law is a dentist, and he got a Sonicare for us.

This toothbrush is amazing! I've always thought that only lazy people use electric toothbrushes, but I can really feel the difference. However, it does take some getting used to. The first time I used the Sonicare, I got toothpaste all over the sink! Also, if you wanted to see a commercial in Japanese on Sonicare, click here.

Unemployment

From economics, I know that unemployment is the situation a person is available and seeking work, but is without work. Therefore, I am a part of that oh-so-exclusive club, of which 8.5% of the nation belonged in March (from the Bureau of Labor Statistics). From what I can tell, based on the various job fairs that I have been to, the market is like this:

Unfortunately for me, there are numerous postings for accountants and auditors, of which I am not interested. They go a little like this:

The ABC Company is seeking a Staff Accountant for its Finance Department. This position will provide assistance with financial and operational analyses related to operations. The Staff Accountant will prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards. Preparation and monitoring of budgetary information, generating P & L statements, and handling all accounting functions related to restricted funds are additional expectations for this position.
Candidates qualified for this position should have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and a minimum of two years related experience. Individuals interested in this position should also demonstrate strong attention to detail and highly developed organizational skills. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to ensure positive interactions with other departments within the organization. Proficiency with Excel, Word, and accounting software are required.
I, however, have not come across a position that was not seeking developed organizational skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and strong attention to detail. I'd like to imagine the company who hired incompetent, incoherent slobs.

This particular job posting for an accountant did catch my eye:
The position requires the ability to lift, load and carry 5 pounds, to remain in a seated position for extended periods, operate computer and other office equipment ...
Being an accountant actually required the ability to carry 30 pounds because those 5 inch binders, when stacked, are quite heavy. The ability to remain seated for extended periods approximate time frames that average 14 hours per day (hence many of my co-workers were out of shape). "Other" office equipment includes dirty keyboards, testy photocopiers, and ancient fax machines.

I, like many people I know, wish I was laid off instead. In Philadelphia, I would actually be entitled to free health services and college classes.

sLowlife

Lucky for me, the Chemical Heritage Foundation in located in Old City, Philadelphia. The admission is free, and I recently took a trip there to explore. The permanent exhibit just re-opened on October 2008, see the highlights as discussed on YouTube here. Currently, the current exhibit is entitled sLowlife, which shows plants as complex living beings that move more than you think (see highlights here).

Also cool was the bathroom, which was made of recycled materials. (Yes, I was taking pictures in the bathroom).

Cherry Blossoms in Philadelphia

On March 28th, I went to Fairmount Park to see the cherry blossoms in Philadelphia. We saw only 5 trees in bloom, though we did come across high school rowers in competition. It was such a nice day afterwards that we went for a walk. We came across an additional 4 trees in bloom in my neighborhood!

Vivi's Cinefest

As you can read from a previous post, I volunteered as an usher with the Philadelphia Cinefest. As a result, I saw the following featured movies:

My favorite was Don't Look Down, but only because of the sweetness of the plot. Before the Fall was the most suspenseful, but I dislike thrillers. Julia had various interesting, convoluted twists, but the movie was long.

Consignment Shops

I've been thinking about consignment shops since I first encountered The Closet in New Brunswick, NJ. I've never been against wearing used clothing, and I used to troll through the racks in Canal Jean Co., Alice Underground, and Andy's Chee-pees. Here are a few that I found in Philadelphia:

Recycle your past treasures for trash!
