The New Dating Scene
J.'s friend wanted to try looking for a new guy from craigslist, and I don't blame her. It's tough to be single and looking for a new relationship. You can only meet so many drunk people in a crowded bar. What's better is her blog to share these juicy details, fitfully named Philly Dates. J., however, thought this was a bad idea. He feared that the replies from CL would be full of raunchy photos from creepy men. I took him on and challenged him to a bet.
We posted on CL NYC on Saturday, spur of the moment, in 'women seeking men.' It was a disjointed entry, with my specs (sweet, asian girl, 22) and J.'s interests (painting, adventures). More importantly, we said, "your pic for mine." The results? 10 replies in the first 20 minutes. A total of 107 replies, only 4 days into the post date. And these replies, with photos, have kept me amused for days:
Investment bankers who don't have time to date in real life. An older man with a home in Cape Cod, where he hopes I'll be a frequent visitor. An attorney with sky blue eyes. A yellow fevered Asiaphile product designer. A PhD candidate. A man interested in conversation, cuddling, and maybe him feeling under your bra. A fine selection of ivy grads. A "sissy gay male" looking for friends. You get the idea. In short, a lot of normal joes, with a bit of the weirdos, and a bit of the cuties.
The photos have been pretty awesome as well. A picture of two people, emailed only with "hello im on the right." A formal class photo of 20 kids, probably from the age of 8. A man on a horse, with the horse's eyes, crotch, and butt, carefully edited out of the photo. Lovely. And this, the come-hither look:
For good measure, we decided to post on 'men seeking women' an hour after the first post. Only 5 replies as of today. So a single girl in NYC? I think not. Just wear your ring, and weed out the creeps. I highly recommend CL for the single gals out there, because you have a great selection, seriously. I'll even forward you some of the emails of cute, cool guys. And unfortunately, J. won the bet. Rauchy picture #1 was received as of tonight.
